Neighborhood Organizing

Comprehensive progress on climate change will require a collaborative and inclusive movement. No one can accomplish real change alone. We are committed to connecting with our neighborhoods, building community resilience, and mobilizing communities to stand up for what they believe.

"Minneapolis faces unique challenges. We have some of the worst racial disparities of any city in the nation. Historic segregation has led to gross injustice to the detriment of some of our most disadvantaged populations. We need to reconnect our disparate communities and build a shared vision for the future of our great city."

- Forrest Theisen
Former MCA Board Member

Some of our organizing initiatives have included: engaging "Recycling Block Leaders," building a generation of "Compost Captains," starting the US Headquarters for Boomerang Bags, organizing neighborhood transit use, gaining support for local Zero Waste efforts, educating and advocating for the Bring Your Own Bag ordinance, and much more.

Education

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.

- Malcolm X

Lack of action is often a result of a lack of education. Driving far-reaching change will require bringing the facts of climate change to light. Minneapolis Climate Action has worked hard to educate and empower our communities about the facts of climate change and the many innovative tools we have to improve sustainability at home and in our greater communities.

Minneapolis Climate Action uses the power of education to drive change in local schools, businesses, neighborhoods, and homes.

Action

Knowledge and inspiration can only get you so far. We strive to take our work to the neighborhoods we love and implement real local solutions that build sustainable and resilient communities.

Our action campaigns include the organics recycling pilot, the Boomerang Bag reusable bag coop, community solar, home energy efficiency, and many more are in the works.

Have an idea to create change? Please contact us and let us know how we can work together to implement innovative local climate solutions.

Advocacy

What is a petition and why is it important?
Petitions are formal written requests, supported by many, used to appeal to authority figures on specific issues. While a petition alone is not enough to enact social and environmental change, it is an easy and effective place to start. Successful and well-supported petitions demonstrate the significance and relevance of topics to those capable of making high-level changes, like elected officials or corporations.

After signing a petition, consider the following action steps: write a letter (many organizations have letters drafted, or you can write your own), call your representatives, and encourage others to get involved as well. The idea behind petition-signing and these other action steps is to demonstrate interest in a specific topic. By remaining stalwart and persistent in your advocacy efforts, petition-signing is an effective way to demand social and environmental change. Consider getting started with these campaigns.
